Loading an M3U playlist on Android TV and Google TV
The difficult part of IPTV on a television is not the playlist — it is the remote control. Typing a long URL with a D-pad is the worst part of the setup, and it is avoidable: pair from your phone and let the playlist transfer over Wi-Fi.
Step 1 — Install a player built for TV
Install a player that ships a genuine television interface rather than a phone layout scaled up. On Android TV and Google TV, ZephyrTV runs from the same Google Play install as the phone version and switches to its TV interface automatically.
Step 2 — Get the playlist onto the TV without typing
Three options, in order of preference:
- Pair from your phone. The TV displays a QR code, you scan it, enter the playlist details on your phone keyboard, and they transfer over your local network.
- Use a Bluetooth keyboard, if you have one paired to the TV.
- Type it with the remote, only as a last resort. Long links and D-pads are a bad combination.
Step 3 — Add the guide
Add your XMLTV guide URL so channels carry programme names and schedules. On a television this matters more than on a phone: browsing a guide grid is how people actually choose what to watch on a TV, and a lineup with no schedule data is close to unusable at a distance.
Step 4 — Make it usable from the sofa
- Favourite aggressively. Twenty favourites beat forty thousand channels.
- Hide unused groups so the D-pad has less to travel through.
- Learn the channel-switching gesture your player offers — a zapper list beats returning to the full lineup every time.
Notes for TV boxes
Cheap Android TV boxes often have limited memory. Very large playlists can strain them. If imports are slow or the app restarts on a low-end box, reduce what you import where the player allows it — for example loading only live channels if you never watch the video-on-demand catalogue.
Play your playlist on Android and Android TV
ZephyrTV is a modern IPTV player for Android phones, tablets, Android TV and Google TV. Paste an M3U link, open an M3U file, or sign in with Xtream Codes — your channels, movies and series import automatically, with a real 7-day TV guide. No account, no ads on the free tier, and your playlist stays on your device.
Frequently asked questions
Can I use the same subscription on TV and phone?
Yes, subject to your provider's concurrent-stream limit.
Why is typing so hard on Android TV?
The on-screen keyboard is driven by a D-pad, so every character needs several presses. Phone pairing avoids it entirely.
Does Google TV work the same as Android TV?
For this purpose, yes. Google TV is an interface layer on top of Android TV.
Can I sideload a player instead of using Google Play?
It is possible, but Play installs update automatically and are the safer route.
