Loading an M3U playlist on Android TV and Google TV

The difficult part of IPTV on a television is not the playlist — it is the remote control. Typing a long URL with a D-pad is the worst part of the setup, and it is avoidable: pair from your phone and let the playlist transfer over Wi-Fi.

Step 1 — Install a player built for TV

Install a player that ships a genuine television interface rather than a phone layout scaled up. On Android TV and Google TV, ZephyrTV runs from the same Google Play install as the phone version and switches to its TV interface automatically.

Step 2 — Get the playlist onto the TV without typing

Three options, in order of preference:

1. Pair from your phone. The TV displays a QR code, you scan it, enter the playlist details on your phone keyboard, and they transfer over your local network.
2. Use a Bluetooth keyboard, if you have one paired to the TV.
3. Type it with the remote, only as a last resort. Long links and D-pads are a bad combination.

Step 3 — Add the guide

Add your XMLTV guide URL so channels carry programme names and schedules. On a television this matters more than on a phone: browsing a guide grid is how people actually choose what to watch on a TV, and a lineup with no schedule data is close to unusable at a distance.

Step 4 — Make it usable from the sofa

• Hide unused groups so the D-pad has less to travel through.

Cheap Android TV boxes often have limited memory. Very large playlists can strain them. If imports are slow or the app restarts on a low-end box, reduce what you import where the player allows it — for example loading only live channels if you never watch the video-on-demand catalogue.
