How to open an M3U file on Android
To open an M3U file on Android, install an IPTV player, then point it at the file or at the playlist URL. Android has no built-in app that reads an M3U channel lineup properly, so the player is the part you have to choose.
Step 1 — Install an IPTV player
Android's built-in video apps play single video files. They do not read a channel lineup. Install a dedicated IPTV player such as ZephyrTV from Google Play. It runs on phones, tablets, Android TV and Google TV from the same install.
Step 2 — Load the playlist
You will have one of two things from your provider:
- A URL ending in
.m3uor.m3u8, often with a username and password inside it. - A downloaded file sitting in your Downloads folder.
In ZephyrTV, choose M3U link or file. Paste the URL, or tap to browse to the file on your device. The import runs automatically and separates live channels, movies and series.
Tip
Prefer the URL over the downloaded file when you have both. A URL re-reads the current lineup every time you refresh; a file is a snapshot that goes stale when your provider adds or removes channels.
Step 3 — Add the TV guide
Programme names and schedules do not live in the M3U file. They come from a separate XMLTV guide source, which your provider supplies as another URL. Add it in settings and the player matches guide entries to your channels, giving you now-and-next information and a full guide grid.
Step 4 — Organise before you watch
A raw import is a wall of channels. A few minutes of setup makes it usable:
- Mark the channels you actually watch as favourites.
- Hide or reorder the groups you never open.
- Use search rather than scrolling — on a lineup of 40,000 entries, scrolling is not a strategy.
If the playlist will not load

| Import fails immediately | The URL has expired, or it was pasted with a missing character. Re-copy it from your provider. |
| Import works, nothing plays | Your provider limits how many devices stream at once. Close the stream elsewhere. |
| Channels load but no programme names | The guide URL is missing, or the guide uses different channel identifiers than the playlist. |
| Import is very slow | Very large lineups take time on the first pass. Later refreshes are quicker. |
